24 Years After Her Death, Here's How Cardi B, Kacey Musgraves and Camila Cabello All Honored Selena at the Houston Rodeo

On Feb. 26, 1995, just a month before her murder, Tejano icon Selena Quintanilla-Pรฉrez performed in Houston for what would be her final concert. Now, 24 years later, artists across the genre spectrum have paid tribute to the late singer by covering her music at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

On March 5, Camila Cabello performed a stirring rendition of “Dreaming of You,” a posthumous hit for Selena in the fall of 1995. Clad in a studded top, dark chaps and topped off with a matching cowboy hat, the 22-year-old pop star led the crowd through the emotional moment — which she later shared on Instagram.

“55,001 souls dreaming of Selena last night at the Houston rodeo,” she captioned the video of her performance. “We love you, Selena ๐ŸŒน

Cabello isn’t the only artist to honor the slain songstress, who was gunned down by her former fan club president Yolanda Saldรญvar on March 31, 1995, at the age of 23.

Cardi B broke attendance records for the event, drawing 75,580 fans earlier this month. In a video shared to Instagram, she revealed that Selena’s strength gave the rapper the confidence to perform in front of the massive crowd — particularly while feeling under the weather.

“I was so nervous to perform in front of 70,000-plus people, but when i saw this picture, like, out of all the outfits that she wore, for me to see this picture with this outfit — this was the inspiration for ‘Please Me’ — I knew I was going to be alright,” Cardi, 26, said before ending the clip with a brief snippet of “Como La Flor.”

Kacey Musgraves performed a longer version of Selena’s 1992 track when she performed at the show on Feb. 25 — almost exactly 24 years after her final concert.

“Twenty-four years ago Selena performed her last concert here,” Musgraves, 30, wrote in an Instagram Story posted to her account at the time. “It was a dream of mine to be able to pay my respects to her iconic legacy.”

In another slide on her Instagram Story, Musgraves shared that performing at the Houston Rodeo has been on her “bucket list for a long time and opening it last night was EVERYTHING.”

“Thank you to all 53k+ of you who made this Texan’s dreams come true,” she added.
